Over 15,000 Square Feet of Phillips

In case you were not able to make it out to Las Vegas this past week for furniture market, we wanted to share some quick walkthroughs of our three showrooms. This is one of the most spectacular presentations we've ever put on, introducing the works of 4 new designers, including Mexican sensation Karla de Lara.

Our main showroom (A202) consists of 8,000 square feet of Phillips Collection's newest products and timeless best sellers. This showroom also includes one-of-a-kind Origins pieces and a selection of items from the all new Karla de Lara.

Our 5,000 square foot Origins showroom (C140) was filled with one-of-a-kind sustainable wood furnishings made from rescued roots of long ago felled trees. The showroom was accented with high end accessories from Phillips Collections partner DK Home, as well as some other select works of art.

Our final showroom (C184) was 2,500 square feet dedicated to Phillips Collections brand new artist, Karla de Lara. Mixing art and play, Karla brings a wide range of creativity and design to Phillips Collection.

Lorrie Berkowitz, J.D., Psy.D. A lawyer turned clinical psychologist has had a life long interest in design.

After moving to NYC to practice law, Lorrie began attending furniture, craft and gift shows on weekends, savoring stories of how creative folks could communicate feelings through mixed media. With a background in real estate law and an endless pursuit of decorative gems, Lorrie was then inspired to purchase, stage, and sell properties. After listening to people express themselves in their relationships and work, she was then led to a second career as a cognitive-behavioral psychologist. Still, days off were filled with purchasing unique gifts and helping others decorate their homes.

And her favorite Phillips Collection products? "The River Stone coffee table and the sculptural sheep family...I would like to put them in a doctor's office with three Seat Belt rocking chairs, and watch how a session of family therapy turns out." She adds, "the designers and production experts at the Phillips Collection communicate a deep connection with serenity, comfort, and balance. I have been to High Point and Atlanta gift shows many times, working informally with designers, and the Phillips' style, presentation and editing sub-consciously express a sophisticated mix of complexity and simplicity."

Married to an oncologist, she and her husband prefer their surroundings to inspire laughter and barefoot gatherings. They are the proud owners of two 700-pound Mickey Mouse statues, purchased from the Walt Disney Company in 2005, for medical charities. Their three children seem to have inherited a blend of serious work and whimsical expression: a daughter at Duke Law school, also studying for a Masters in Art History; a college son double majoring in History and Computer Science, and another son in high school, juggling rowing on the crew team, academics, and piano performance. Coincidentally, her husband learned to swim in a motel in High Point, accompanying family members twice a year to the market shows. He is a medical doctor who is writing a novel.

22nd Annual Arts Awards

Phillips Collection announces photo competition

HIGH POINT, NC, December 7, 2010 -- Phillips Collection (www.phillipscollection.com), is proud to announce its first photo competition which asks entrants to submit lifestyle photographs showcasing one or more Phillips Collection products. The contest will run between 12/7/10 and 12/31/2010. The prize of the competition consists of a $250 voucher.

To enter the competition, participants must submit a high resolution digital image, minimum 8.5” x 11” to creative@phillipscollection.com. We are directly on Interstate 85 Business and have made a jump to a much larger and improved location for our day to day operations. Jason Phillips Wins Pinnacle Award!

Congratulations to our own Jason Phillips for winning a Pinnacle Award. The Burled Metallic Bowls are the top accessory of 2010!

Jason is one of the 16 winners honored with Pinnacle Design Achievement Awards by the American Society of Furniture Designers - 15 in product categories and one in the new Green Leaf Award category. This was the 15th year ASFD has presented the awards. Jason was honored in the Accessories category with his burled bowl design. The burled bowl comes in silver leaf, gold leaf and wood finishes, as will as two shapes.

New York Times Features Phillips Collection

We are proud to announce that the Phillips Collection has been featured in the New York Times once again! This time it is for our Bonsai Trees from the Origins Collection. You can find the article in the August 12, 2010 issue on page D3 or see it online by clicking Phillips Collection's New Bonsai Sculpture. The article reads:

All wood products, when you think about it, are made of dead wood. But few have the poignancy of Phillips Collection's new "end of life" Bonsai Sculpture Collection: dead bonsai trees or branches from Thailand that have been bleached and mounted on iron bases, and, as shown, can be placed in a shapely polished aluminum and resin vase.

"We just call it 'The Bonsai Collection,' " said Mark Phillips, the company's co-owner. " 'End of life' doesn't have as beautiful a ring, although it accurately describes it." Too bad - "end of life" was such an evocative phrase.

The event will kick off with a screening of the Art of Design Awards Film, and a panel discussion on redefining luxury moderated by Carolyn Engelfield, VERANDA Editor-at-Large. Panelists include Art of Design Award recipient Jason Phillips, Suzanne Kasler, Bobby McAlpine and Roger Thomas.

We had the honor and the pleasure of touring our facilities with Mayor Becky Smothers and Sandy Dunbeck, Senior VP of the High Point Economic Development Corp.

They are looking towards leaders in the community who can help generate new ideas and opportunities for the area to help infuse and reinvigorate the local economy.

It was a productive meeting and the loved our facility so much that they want to host one of their monthly High Point Economic Development Board Meetings at our office this fall and include a tour of the facilities for their team.

Julie PhillipsGREENSBORO, N.C. — Ten industry people have been nominated for WithIt's 2010 WOW Awards, which will be presented at a dinner ceremony during the group's Professional Conference, set for Aug. 17-19 at the Renaissance Charlotte Suites Hotel in Charlotte, N.C.

The annual awards recognize business leaders nominated by their peers who have contributed to the success of the home furnishings industries and have demonstrated significant impact on their companies, the industry, or both.
Additionally, WithIt will honor Julie Phillips, vice president of The Phillips Collection, with its 2010 Legacy Award during its WOW Awards banquet on August 18.

Phillips Takes Home the Gold for the Silver....

Yeah, yeah, we win a lot of awards, but we can't help but brag on ourselves for some of the recent success. There has been a lot of hard work being put into various sales and design outlets and recognition like this deserves a blog posting :)

At the recent Las Vegas Furniture Market this Feb, the World Market Center unveiled the INSPIREDESIGN Show, catering to the contract and hospitality world. A distinguished panel of judges, including D.B. Kim and the editorial team from INTERIOR DESIGN announced the winners of their inaugural INSPIREDESIGN Design Excellence Award, which amogst the winners was the Silver Leafed Resin Console designed by Jason Phillips.

Jason remarks, "I cannot take too much credit for the work as it is nature that made this piece what it is. I simply thought how nice it would look dressed up. What I can take credit for is the way we are pushing the boundaries on what resin really is and why it is taboo. We are using post-consumer recycled composites with less toxic glues to create durable, repeatable works of art that are less prone to breakage, work outdoors, and can acheive any finish imaginable."

Jason Phillips wins 2010 Product Designer of the Year!

It was my first time out in Dallas for the Furniture Market (I usually just get sent down for showroom setup!) and my first ARTS Awards. I was blown away by the Oscar-like feel to the whole event and was even more floored when I discovered I was selected the winner of 2010 Product Designer of the Year. I was amongst the top designers in the industry and was presented the award by industry icons Clodagh and Joe Ruggiero.

I'd like to take a moment to congratulation industry friends Paragon, PALECEK and Global Views on not only their wins but their induction into the Hall of Fame! Great job guys :)

What a surprise to find we were featured in two leading shelter publications in one day! The Art of Design Awards featured a spread on the winners, including Jason Phillips. A special thanks to Deborah Sanders for the article.

From the article (pgs 42 and 43, VERANDA, March 2010) :

"Detail and pedigree. Luxury is about refined detailing. Bespoke tailoring at every corner. That, married with a respected brand, is true luxury."

Even though he doesn't wear blue tights, a red Speedo or an oversize cape, Jason Phillips appears to be "moving faster than a speeding bullet." At 26, the Long Island native is edging toward Superman status in the world of furniture design. He is the best of a new generation of talent that has turned its short attention span into an asset by assimilating so much, so quickly, from so many.

Instead of pulling out pen and paper, forms are digitally graphed one pixel at a time. Phillips uses 3-D CAD systems to draw and design everything from tables and chairs to bookcases and cabinetry. At the age of 24, Phillips launched his own high-end, limited edition collection, Jason Phillips Design. His forms are minimalist but highly sculptural. "I have always been torn between two worlds--art and design. I categorize my world as a hybrid of the two."

The designer follows fashion blogs, luxury blogs, even automobile blogs the world over. Formal training came at the University of Michigan, where he studied industrial design, but he readily admits he had other advantages. Twenty-five years ago, his family started the Phillips Collection, which had its beginnings as an importer of Southeast Asian antiquities. In time, the company began manufacturing a whole line of furnishings. Growing up, Phillips was showered in a wash of imagery by the family's travels. "I came to appreciate the perspective this gave me on craft."

In high school, he had the opportunity to attend the Huntington School of Fine Arts. After college, he joined the family business and was made the company's national sales manager in 2005. Now seventy-five percent of his time is spent as creative director. Twice a year he goes to Asia. The company collection comprises 1,750 skus and Phillips works with six factories overseas in the design of production for it as well as licensed products for other companies such as Crate & Barrel and Horchow.

When he is not working for the family business, the designer devotes attention to his own collection. His dual roles have put him in tune with a universe operating at mach speed, and yet his forward motion is tempered by a simple, uncompromising desire to create those special, one-of-a-kind forms destined to be influential in the luxury market.

What a great morning, with the brand new issue of INTERIOR DESIGN magazine on my desk and a post-it marking our full page feature on pg. 67! The article, titled "like mother, like son", reads:

"Playing pick-up sticks was never this intriguing. For her Furry pendant fixture, Julie Phillips of the Phillips Collection specified strands of renewable rattan handwoven by artisans in Thailand into a cluster 29 inches across, then wired it for an incanescent or a compact-fluorescent bulb. Please join us in congratulating Jason & Julie Phillips for their Galvanized Wall Circles, which is up for an award in the Accessories Category. Artist Jeremy Penn was also nominated in this category for his Bloomin' Onion Vase, which he designed exclusively for TPC. Allan Palecek's Birch Forest is the third finalist in the Accessories Category. Best of luck to all finalists!

We also were nominated in a new category for Phillips - Entertainment Centers/Home Theatres - for our Bamboo Media Center, designed by Manee Meepanya.

NEW YORK -- Simple shapes, sustainable woods, bright colors and flexible footprints were among the trends at this year’s International Contemporary Furniture Fair here.

In 145,000 square feet in the Jacob Javits Convention Center, this year’s show featured 552 exhibitors, including 212 first-time participants and 263 foreign firms.

Attendance was 23,500, representing a mix of interior designers, architects, retailers, designers and distributors, show officials said.

One exhibitor pleased by its results here was the Phillips Collection, a supplier of furniture and home accents.

“For me, the show was enlightening,” said Jason Phillips, vice president. “There was such a pool of talent here that I’m convinced this is the purest showcasing of contemporary design in the Americas.”

Phillips said his company had a “great response” to its Seatbelt chairs and Origins collection. “We (generated) leads from interior designers, hospitality firms and retailers from around the country. The majority of buyers were from the New York metro region, as expected.”
